<p>AbiWord est une interface � document simple. (SDI, Single Document Interface) C'est-�-dire
que la fen�tre d'AbiWord ne peut contenir qu'un document � la fois. Si l'on ouvre un
autre document ou si l'on en cr�e un nouveau, une nouvelle fen�tre d'AbiWord
appara�tra.
A l'inverse, la fermeture d'AbiWord entra�nera la fermeture du document. (ou, dit
autrement, la fermeture du document entra�nera la fermeture d'AbiWord)</p>
<p>Ceci est � l'opposition des interfaces � document multiple (MDI, Multiple Document
Interface) comme par exemple Microsoft Word 97 o� tous les documents sont contenus dans la
seule et unique fen�tre, celle du programme Word. La fermeture d'un document
n'entra�nera
pas la fermeture de Microsoft Word.</p>

</center></div><p>La technologie SDI a �t� adopt�e pour AbiWord en particulier pour
deux raisons majeures:<ol>
<li>AbiWord �tant d�velopp� sur plusieurs plate formes � la fois (Windows, Unix et
bient�t Mac), il a �t� d�cid� de mettre l'accent sur l'uniformit� de chacune de ces
versions. Unix �tant bas� sur le concept de l'interface � document simple (SDI), c'est
donc ce dernier qui a �t� retenu. Ainsi chaque document AbiWord ouvert est
ais�ment accessible via la barre des t�ches de Windows, ind�pendamment de l'application.<br>

<li>L'application la plus famili�re des utilisateurs d'aujourd'hui est sans conteste le
navigateur Internet. Les navigateurs les plus populaires utilisent le concept SDI. De ce
fait, beaucoup d'utilisateurs sont maintenant habitu�s � ce concept et de moins en moins
habitu�s au concept oppos�, celui des interfaces � document multiple.
Cela renforce le
choix de cette technologie. Ainsi, les utilisateurs d�butants n'ont pas � se soucier de
savoir comment AbiWord fonctionne, il fonctionne juste de la mani�re � laquelle
ils s'attendent. Les nouveaux utilisateurs d'AbiWord ne seront donc pas d�pays�s.</li>
