Inserting Objects

To streamline the creation of your document, AbiWord allows you to insert preset objects.

   


Inserting Date and Time

To automatically insert the current date and time, position the cursor where you want to insert the date. Go to the "Insert" menu and click on "Date and Time".

A window with different formats for date and time will appear. Choose the desired format and click the "OK" button to insert or the "Cancel" button to cancel.

  • The following window will appear:

Symbols

To insert a symbol or special character that does not appear on the keyboard into your document, position the cursor where you want to insert it. Then do one of the following:

  1. Go to the "Insert" menu and click on "Symbol...".

    • The following window will appear:

      Insert Symbol

    • Select the character font on the top by clicking on arrow at the topmost field.
    • Click the desired character on the grid.
    • When the character is enlarged on the bottom, click "Insert".
    • Repeat as many times as is necessary.
    • When finished, click on the "Close" button.

  2. Use the keyboard short cut by simultaneously pressing the "Ctrl " and "M" keys.


Image

Abiword is able to insert images into your documents. The following image formats can be used
  • *.png (Portable Network Graphics) Format
  • *.bmp (Windows Bitmap) Format
  • *.svg (Scalable Vector Graphics) Format

To insert an image, position hte cursor, where you wish the picture to go, and goto the "Image menu". Click on "Image..."

  • The following window will appear:

     Insertion of images.

Then enter(or browse to) the path where your image is and click on "Open " button to insert the image.

AbiWord regards this inserted image as a character. So it is subject to existing alignments and line spacing, and can be moved by spacing or tabs.

Fields

To insert fields into your document, go to the "Insert" menu and click on "Field". This will bring up the fields dialog. Here you can choose to insert:

  • current date and time
  • page number
  • number of page
  • field label
