Apply Text Emphasis
AbiWord provides you with several options for changing the appearance of text. For instance, you can make your text bold, italic, underlined, or you can change the color. You can even combine two or more of these effects within the same text.
Bold
Making text bold, darker than the regular text, is the easiest and probably the best way to make text stand out. Bold text is typically used for headings.
Let's apply some bold formatting to your text by following these two easy steps:
- Select some text from your document, such as a heading or title
- Select the button from the Formatting toobar

Italics
Italicizing your text makes the text appear slanted to the right. Such formatting is typically used to emphasis items such as titles of books or articles, names, or even words that are significant.
Let's apply some italic formatting to your text by following these two simple instructions:
- Select some text from your document that may be important
- Select the button

Underline
Yet another way to add emphasis to text is to underline it. Underlining text is typically used for column headings, or as another way to emphasis titles.
Let's apply some underline formatting to your text by following these two simple steps:
- Select some text that you'd like to underline

Color
Adding color to flyers and other sorts of complex documents can really make a difference. Unless you have a color printer or plan on publishing your work on the internet, however, the color option should not be used.
