Apply Subscript/Superscript Formatting to Text

You may find it necessary to make text appear lower (subscript) or higher (superscript) than the other characters on the same line or in the same word in many instances. For example, in the formula H20, the number 2 resides lower than the other two characters, therefore, subscription occurs. However, when you add a footnote to your text, you will want the the footnote number or symbol to appear above the footnote text--superscript.

Subscript

Let's apply subscript formatting to the formula H20 by following these three easy steps:

• Type H2O
• Highlight 2 in H2O
• Select the Subscript button

Superscript

Now let's apply superscript formatting to a footnote by in following these basic instructions:

• Type the following sentence: Scientists examined the fossilized remains of the wooly-wooly yak.1
• Highlight 1
• Select the Superscript button
